Ocean County Sheriff's Department Issues Safety Tips

OCEAN COUNTY - During this holiday season, Ocean County Sheriff William Polhemus would like to remind the community about holiday safety. "This is a time that families and friends gather and share good times, but we must also remember to practice good safety rules so that our holidays remain joyous."

During this season, there is always an increase in home fire-related incidents. Sheriff Polhemus stresses, "Use common sense when cooking, and don't be careless. The holidays, in most homes, means the smell of a good home-cooked meal. It is easy to get distracted entertaining guests, but it is important to monitor meal preparations, since fires can start when cooking is left unattended. Remember to keep anything that may catch fire away from your stovetop, and be sure to keep children away from your cooking or preparation areas."

Polhemus also advises, "Be a safe and courteous traveler." The holiday season brings with it an increase in traffic on the roadways. Plan ahead for extra time, and keep in mind the possibility of poor weather conditions. Don't be an aggressive driver, and give plenty of room to those who are. If you are drinking or are too tired, don't get behind the wheel. Have a designated driver, or plan to stay overnight. Those traveling with children should always properly place them in a child safety seat. The Ocean County Sheriff's Department offers a free child seat inspection program. This program will assist you in learning how to safely install and buckle children in a car seat. For more information on child safety seats, call Jun Farrington at 732-341-3451.

The sheriff also reminds residents to be cautious, and stay safe while out shopping during this season. Many people take the opportunity to shop at all the sales during this time of year, but there are tips for their safety while out and about. At a minimum, keep your car locked at all times, park in well-lit areas and keep valuables in the trunk or out of sight in your vehicle. When you are returning to your vehicle, carry your keys in your hand and always check both the front and rear seats of your car before entering. If possible, shop with a friend or in a group and always avoid parking anywhere you feel unsafe.

Finally, the sheriff reminds people, "Many people are struggling this year, and we must remember those who are less fortunate and need the help of others. Please remember to help those who are in need this holiday season." The Sheriff's Department has begun its annual food and toy drive. For information on donating non-perishable food or a new toy, or to be a recipient, please contact Mary McHugh at 732-929-4756.
