OCC Announces Classes

TOMS RIVER - If you have a bachelor's degree and would like to become a teacher, the Alternate Route to Teaching can help you become a licensed teacher without completing a traditional teacher-training program. Ocean County College's Officefor School Relations is offering online information sessions on Alternate Route to Teaching Certification.

Attending an online information session is easy. On May 21, just log onto www.ocean. edu/alternate.htm from 10 to 11 a.m. and from 4 to 5 p.m. Representatives will be available, via live chat, to answer your questions and provide information about this innovative program.

Students attend classes on OCC's main campus in Toms River and may take the program either as a teacher certificationrequirement or for graduate-level credit toward a master of arts in teaching from New Jersey City University.

In order to qualify, certain requirements must be met. Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with a major in an arts and sciences field for elementary education or a major in the field for subject area license, and they must also have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher for their last degree earned. Other requirements may apply.

For more information, contact school relations at 732-255-0477.

In addition, Ocean County College's Department of Continuing and Professional Education is offering two new workshops geared toward health care professionals. OCC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the New Jersey State Nurses Association (NJSNA), an accredited approver of continuing nurse's education by the American Nurses Credentialing Centers on Accreditation. Nurses can earn 3.0 NJSNA contact hours for each class of the following two courses.

The Spectrum of Eating Disorders: obesity, anorexia and bulimia will meet on May 15 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Room 105, Nursing Building at the OCC Main Campus on College Drive. Many parents and health professionals believe that eating disorders are only identified in adolescence. Issues with nutrition, self-esteem and eating habits begin in preschool and can be incorporated into school-based education and health screenings in elementary, middle and high school as well as health education in primary care settings. This workshop will include statistics related to obesity, anorexia and bulimia; the USDA food pyramid for children; and current trends related to childhood obesity. The cost is $69.

Blood Borne Pathogens - MRSA, MDRO and Tuberculosis will meet on June 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at OCC's Center for Business Education and Training, 150 Brick Boulevard in Brick. This workshop will explore diagnosis, treatment options, current infection control practices, the importance of MRSA surveillance and screening and identificationof multi-drug resistance organisms. The cost is $69. Please register by June 3.
