Ocean County Library Celebrates Diversity

TOMS RIVER - Three branches of the Ocean County Library will host a photography and text display celebrating the diversity of families in Ocean County.

"In Our County: The Faces of Families" will be displayed in Toms River, 101 Washington Street; in Jackson, 2 Jackson Drive; and Lakewood at 301 Lexington Avenue during National Family Month from mid-May through mid-June.

The exhibit will consist of photographs and interviews of eight families in Ocean County.

"Families are the most fundamental and basic units of society," said Mark Zieniuk, who created the exhibit. "But the variation of household types and the complexity of family life have never been, or will ever be static."

"The exhibit is important because it strives to show that there is no such thing as the normal family and that the right to define family exists with each individual family themselves," said Zieniuk. "By showcasing the diversity of families in Ocean County, it is hoped that people will see that in our diversity, there is much more that we have in common. Strong families, no matter their makeup, contribute to the general well-being of the communities in which they reside."

A portion of the exhibit will be available on the library's Web site, www.theoceancountylibrary. org. The online display will also have an audio recording of the interviews.

The exhibits are free and open to the public. Registration is not required to attend.
