Some 300 residents attended Jackson Township's Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony last week. Crowds of people eagerly crowded around the Christmas tree behind the township's municipal building in hopes of getting the best view.

There was never a quiet moment while members of the community awaited the lighting of the tree. Entertainment of many kinds took place around the guests of last Saturday night's ceremonies.

"The 2007 Jackson Township Tree Lighting event was an overwhelming success," said Eric Schubiger, the director of Recreation and Senior Services. "Guests were treated to musical performance by the Jackson Council for Arts Civic Chorus, Jackson Memorial High School Band and the Hope Cathedral Praise Team."

Guests were also welcomed to warm up inside town hall, enjoying homemade holiday cookies and hot chocolate.

Eric Schubiger said that Mayor Mark Seda and members of the town council led everyone outside when it was time to count down to the ceremonial lighting of the tree.

As children glared in awe at the bright Christmas tree in front of them, they were surprised by the most popular person of the season. Santa Claus made a special visit to Jackson to take pictures with each of the families in attendance.

Spectators also came together in appreciation for the newly added Nativity scene, donated by the Jackson Clergy Association.

Sheri Silversmith, a contributor of the Recreation and Senior Services, said that it was good to see that there was enough entertainment for members of the community who attended the ceremony both before and after the tree lighting.

Councilwoman Ingram and Councilman Martin both expressed their appreciation for the success of the township's annual tree lighting ceremony at this week's council meeting.

Guests stayed at the ceremony until the festivities concluded at around 7 p.m. The Jackson Tree Lighting was the first official township event that took place to help get residents in the holiday spirit and to kick-off the start of the Christmas season.
